Getting prepared for the big St.Ives getaway

Posted by: Claire Gilbert 17-08-2015

There’s nowhere better to be in the summer months than St.Ives in Cornwall – and when the sun is shining, you can see why it’s referred to as the jewel in the crown of the South West. With a range of golden sandy beaches, calm waters and meandering streets lined with art galleries and boutique shops, there’s something for everyone in this beautiful town. Its wonderful setting however does mean that the town is inundated with visitors at the height of the summer both staying and visiting for the day. With a team of locals in our office who know the town inside out and as a provider of over 40 self-catering holiday properties exclusively in St. Ives, we thought we’d share our hot tips and tricks to make you’re stay in the town as hassle-free as possible.

Parking practicalities

St.Ives has steep hills and narrow cobbled streets, mainly on a one-way system, so it’s best to prepare where you’re aiming to park in advance as car parking in the town is in high demand. If your property does not have a parking space included, there are several long and short stay car parks throughout the town. You can also purchase a rover ticket online here up to ten days before arrival, which allows you to stay in most public car parks in Cornwall. Otherwise visit the One Stop Shop at St.Ives library when you’re down here. The ticket costs £47.00 per week, with the added benefit that if you’re not able to park in your first choice car park, you can use the same ticket in other council car parks in the town. Beware however that buying a ticket doesn’t guarantee a parking space will be available.

Hassle-free valet service

If you’re unlikely to be leaving the town too much during your stay, then it’s worth considering secure car parking out of town to avoid the daily hassle of parking. You can book secure car parking at a cost of £48.00 per week when pre-booked and they will drive you and your luggage to the property and pick you up when you wish to leave at the end of your holiday.

Book in advance

There is a great array of restaurants on offer in St.Ives to cater to all tastes. From classical fish restaurants to mediterranean pizzerias, the choice is broad. Many eateries can cater for couples up to large parties, but if you want the best tables in the house or ensure that your large party can be catered for at a time of your choice, then it’s worth booking in advance. There are some great beachside restaurants including Porthminster Beach Café and beautiful dining experiences such as Alba and The Hidden Kitchen.  If the weather report is also not looking that great, making a reservation for lunch-time dining is also highly recommended.

Beach ready

If you’re planning a day filled with buckets and spades on one of the town’s beaches, don’t forget to pack the sun lotion. The sun is very strong on the Cornish coast so we definitely recommend a high factor for your sun-cream to avoid a beachside burn. Porthminster and Porthmeor beaches are manned by lifeguards, so stay water-safe and keep within the red & yellow flags for safe bathing. All of the beaches also have café and toilet facilities although it’s worth selecting a spot on the beach that’s central so you don’t spend hours walking to and fro.
